In its Element
Marin Headlands, view to the Golden Gate Bridge (2013)
When a couple of friends suggested that I join them on a trip to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge, I initially turned my nose up at the idea. I tend to have a strong aversion to locations that are likely to be chock-a-block with other photographers, so I went along on this outing somewhat reluctantly. To my surprise, a bit of hiking enabled us to reach an area that we had entirely to ourselves and that provided a beautiful natural foreground that I have never seen included in a photograph of this bridge. The icing on the cake was getting conditions that all came together as if they were custom ordered. The fog this evening rolled in right on cue, and the clouds in the background (the only ones for miles around) sailed in out of nowhere and parked themselves directly behind the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge right before sunset. Some shots are just meant to be.
